Danish Institute for Sports Studies

Including Play the Game and Danish Institute for Non-Formal Education

The Danish Institute for Sports Studies (Idrættens Analyseinstitut) is an independent research centre set up by the Danish Ministry of Culture.

The primary objective of the Danish Institute for Sports Studies is to initiate and develop a broad range of social science research projects in the field of sports. Furthermore, the aim of the Institute is to analyse political initiatives regarding the world of sports and stimulate public debate around central questions related to these initiatives.

Since merging with Play the Game on 1 January, 2011, the institute is also responsible for the organisation of the international Play the Game conference and for the promotion of democracy, transparency and freedom of expression within the international sports community.

Since March 2013 the institute is equally responsible for the establishment and development of a new Danish Institute for Non-formal Education (Videncenter for Folkeoplysning, Vifo) as part of the activities of the institution.

The Institute is lead by a board of eight members assigned by the Danish Minister of Culture. The daily activities are managed by the director, Henrik H. Brandt.

The objectives of the Institute are:

  • to establish a general overview of and insight into academic and other forms of research within the fields of sports and non-formal education nationally as well as internationally
  • to analyse the implications and perspectives of policy initiatives within the fields of sports and non-formal education
  • to initiate public debate on key issues in non-formal education and in Danish and international sports politics
  • to organise the international Play the Game conference at suitable intervals for a target group of Danish and international journalists, academic researchers and sports officials
  • In the period 2013-2015 to establish and develop a Danish Institute for Non-formal Education (Videncenter for Folkeoplysning) with an independent research and communication profile

The Danish Institute for Sports Studies has a basic funding of 5.528 million kroner per year (2012-2013) from the Ministry of Culture. The Danish Institute for Non-formal Education receives a further 2 million kroner per year for the three years, 2013-2015. Moreover, commissioned research projects are a part of the monetary funding of the Danish Institute of Sport Studies.

The institute has a close co-operation with the Institute for Sport Science & Clinical Biomechanics at the University of Southern Denmark in Odense as well as other Danish research institutions.
